  48. This is a list of the subjects on the CD-ROM.  
  49. Selecting one of the subjects will display the 
  50. files in that subject.

  52. The menu at the top of the screen will allow you 
  53. to exit the program, search for files, keywords, 
  54. or archive contents, or configure ThePier(tm) CD-ROM
  55. Access Program.  You can select the items from the 
  56. top menu with your mouse or by pressing the 
  57. highlighted letter of the desired choice in 
  58. combination with the Alt key.  (For instance, to 
  59. select System, hold down the Alt key and press the 
  60. 'S' key.)

  64. The System menu is used for overall program 
  65. control.  From it, you can exit the program, drop 
  66. to DOS temporarily, or execute your custom shell 
  67. program.

  71. The DOS Shell option will allow you to go to DOS 
  72. and return to ThePier(tm) by typing EXIT.

  76. The Custom Shell option will allow you to jump to 
  77. your favorite file management program.  (See 
  78. Configure for more information on this.)

  86. The Search menu allows you to search the database 
  87. for filenames, keywords, and archive content 
  88. filenames.  Searches at this level will include 
  89. all subjects.

  93. This option will allow you to search the database 
  94. for a particular filename.

  97.  Keyword Search Help 
  98. This option will allow you to search the database 
  99. for a particular keyword.  All significant words 
  100. in the file descriptions have been indexed, so 
  101. any file with the word you specify in its 
  102. description will appear in the file list.

  105.  Archive Content Search Help 
  106. This option will allow you to search the database 
  107. for a particular archive content filename.  Most 
  108. of the files on the CD are archive files that 
  109. actually contain other files.  The resulting file 
  110. list will contain all the archive files that 
  111. contain a file matching the search criteria.

  115. The Configure menu allows you to set up ThePier(tm)
  116. for your system.  It lets you control the display 
  117. mode, the active database, the directories used by 
  118. ThePier(tm), and the viewer programs.

  122. The Display option allows you to force ThePier(tm) to
  123. use text mode displays.

  127. The Active Database option is used to select an 
  128. alternate database.  If you have more than one The 
  129. Pier Shareware CD-ROM, you can use this option to 
  130. switch among the CDs.

  134. The Directories option is used to identify the 
  135. directory paths used by ThePier(tm).

  139. The Viewers option allows you to associate 
  140. external programs with specific file extensions.  
  141. When you click on a content file with the 
  142. specified extension, the associated external 
  143. program will be executed.

  146.  Search Criteria Help 
  147. This screen allows you to specify the criteria 
  148. used for a database search.  The Key field is used 
  149. to specify the filename or keyword for which to 
  150. search.  Wildcard characters are not allowed, but 
  151. you can enter a partial key.  If Exact Match Only 
  152. is checked, complete words must be entered in the 
  153. Key field.  If not checked, the beginning of a 
  154. word or filename may be entered.

  157.  Configure Display Help 
  158. This screen allows you to force ThePier(tm) to use
  159. text mode displays.  ThePier(tm) will normally use
  160. graphics mode if your display systems supports 
  161. it.  Text mode displays are slightly faster than 
  162. graphics mode and may be necessary if your 
  163. display system is non-standard.  Changes to the 
  164. Display setting will take effect the next time 
  165. you run ThePier(tm).  You can also force text mode by
  166. using the /T option on the command line when you 
  167. start ThePier(tm).

  170.  Configure Database Help
  171. This screen is used to select an alternate ThePier(tm)
  172. database.  If you have more than one The Pier 
  173. Shareware CD-ROM you can use this screen to select 
  174. the database associated with one of the other 
  175. CD-ROMs.  If you only have one The Pier Shareware 
  176. CD-ROM, do not change the settings on this screen.

  178. You can select any of the directories shown in the 
  179. lower right section by clicking on them with your 
  180. mouse.  If you don't have a mouse, use the TAB key 
  181. to switch to the directory section, then use the 
  182. arrow keys to highlight the desired directory.  
  183. Press the ENTER key to select the directory.

  185. If the desired directory is on another drive, 
  186. position to the Dir field and type the desired 
  187. drive letter.
  188.  
  189. When you've selected the proper directory, 
  190. position to the left window and select the desired 
  191. database file.  To finalize the database 
  192. selection, position to and select the OK button.

  194. To exit the Active Database screen without making 
  195. a selection, press ESCAPE or select Cancel.

  198.  Configure Directories Help
  199. Directories Configuration allows you to specify 
  200. the directories used by ThePier(tm).  The Work
  201. Directory is used by ThePier(tm) for temporary files.
  202. A default value is set up by the installation 
  203. program, but you can change it if desired.  
  204.  
  205. The Default Copy/Extract Directory specifies the 
  206. default directory used when copying or extracting 
  207. archive files.  This is just a default and can be 
  208. changed on the fly when copying or extracting 
  209. files.  
  210.  
  211. The Comment Database Directory specifies the 
  212. location of the comment database.  By default, 
  213. this is the directory where ThePier(tm) program
  214. resides.  It is recommended that you stay with the 
  215. default.
  216.  
  217. CD-ROM Drive specifies the drive letter of your 
  218. CD-ROM drive.  The installation program initially 
  219. sets this value to the drive from which ThePier(tm)
  220. was installed.  If you have more than one CD-ROM 
  221. drive, you will need to change this value if you 
  222. move The Pier Shareware CD-ROM to a different 
  223. CD-ROM drive.

  226.  Configure Viewers Help
  227. The Viewer Configuration screen is used to define 
  228. external programs that will be activated by 
  229. ThePier(tm) in different situations.
  230.  
  231. Default Viewer is the file viewer program used by 
  232. ThePier(tm) when another viewer is not associated with
  233. the selected file.  ThePier(tm) contains a built in
  234. default viewer, but it is suitable only for text 
  235. files.  If the Default Viewer field is left 
  236. blank, the built in viewer will be used.  An 
  237. excellent alternative viewer is Vern Buerg's List 
  238. program.  The current version of List should be 
  239. available on The Pier Shareware CD-ROM.  (List is 
  240. a shareware program and should be registered if 
  241. you use it.)

  243. Shell Program is the program executed when you 
  244. select the Custom Shell option from one of the 
  245. drop-down menus.  It can be used to execute a file 
  246. management program such as Norton Commander or 
  247. PCTools.  
  248.  
  249. The remainder of the screen contains pairs of 
  250. Viewer specifications and their associated File 
  251. Extensions.  When a file with one of the specified 
  252. extensions is selected from an archive content 
  253. list, the viewer associated with that extension is 
  254. executed.  Each viewer can have up to ten 
  255. extensions associated with it.  If you need more 
  256. than ten extensions associated with a particular 
  257. viewer, you can specify the viewer more than once.
  258. The Viewer field should contain the whatever you 
  259. would normally enter at the DOS command line to 
  260. execute the program.
  261.  
  262. It should be noted that these programs are not 
  263. strictly limited to "viewer" programs.  For 
  264. instance, if you have a sound card, you may find 
  265. it useful to associate a sound file player with 
  266. file extensions like .MOD and .WAV.  This will 
  267. allow you to click on a .WAV file and have it 
  268. automatically extracted and played on your sound 
  269. card.

  271. In all of the above program specification fields, 
  272. ThePier(tm) will substitute the sequence $F with the
  273. full path and filename of the selected file.  The 
  274. sequence $D will be substituted with the name of 
  275. the target directory.  For instance, to use Vern 
  276. Buerg's List program as the Default Viewer, you 
  277. would enter LIST $F in the Default Viewer field.  
  278. This would activate List and pass on the command 
  279. line the name of the file to be viewed.  $D may be 
  280. useful with the Shell Program if your selected 
  281. file management program will accept a directory on 
  282. the command line.

  285.  Files Help 
  286. This is a list of the files in the selected 
  287. subject.  To get complete details on a specific 
  288. file, click on the file with your mouse or 
  289. highlight the desired file and press ENTER.

  293. down the Alt key and pressing one of the 
  294. highlighted letters in the menu.

  302. The System menu is used for overall program 
  303. control.  From it, you can return to the previous 
  304. screen, exit the program, drop to DOS 
  305. temporarily, or execute your custom shell program.

  309. Return to Previous Screen will take you back to 
  310. the previous screen.

  314. The Search menu allows you to search the database 
  315. for filenames, keywords, and archive content 
  316. filenames.  Searches at this level will include 
  317. only files in the current subject.

  320.  File Detail Help 
  321. This screen contains details about a specific 
  322. file.  The archive file name, directory, date and 
  323. size are at the top left of the screen.

  325. At the top right is a list of the files contained 
  326. within the archive file.  If the file is not an 
  327. archive, the list at the upper right will be a 
  328. repeat of the file name.  The scroll bar at the 
  329. right of this window can be used to scroll 
  330. through the list of files.  Selecting one of the 
  331. files in this list will cause ThePier(tm) to extract
  332. that file from the archive and pass the extracted 
  333. file to the appropriate "viewer".

  335. In the middle of the screen is the complete 
  336. description of the file.  The scroll bar at the 
  337. right can be used to scroll the description up and 
  338. down.

  340. Under the description window is the comments 
  341. window.  This can be used to enter your own 
  342. comments about this file.  These comments will be 
  343. saved in a special database and will be displayed 
  344. whenever you view the detail information about 
  345. this file.

  347. At the very bottom of the screen is a prompt bar 
  348. showing the active keys and their effects.  
  349. PageDown will move to the next file in this 
  350. subject.  PageUp will move to the previous file in 
  351. this subject.  Ctrl-PageDown will move to the 
  352. first file in the next subject.  Ctrl-PageUp will 
  353. move to the first file in the previous subject.  
  354. Alt-C will move the cursor to the comment window 
  355. from anywhere on the screen.  Clicking on any of 
  356. the prompts with your mouse will take the 
  357. associated action.

  361. The File option allows you to take certain actions 
  362. on the current file.

  366. The Copy option will copy the current archive file 
  367. to the selected directory.

  371. The Extract option will extract the contents of 
  372. the current archive file into the selected

  379. selected directory and then activate the Custom 
  380. Shell program.

  384. The Extract and Shell to DOS option will extract 
  385. the contents of the current archive file into the 
  386. selected directory and then shell to DOS in that
